Vintage 1909 movie props from "The Airship Destroyer" ... steampunk all the way

 Airship destoryer in the above image, it's used as a unmanned drone to blow up blimps/airships... the petal propeller and dragonfly wings are comical

I just watched Raiders of the Lost Ark, and wondered about that Nazi flying wing

The Nazi Flying Wing seen in the film was not a real plane.

 Raiders production designer Norman Reynolds designed the plane for the film, based on historical Northrop Corporation designs and drawings by Ron Cobb of the Horten Ho-2-29.

The fake plane was built by Vickers, and was painted in London at EMI Elstree Studios. In order to ship the unwieldy prop to Tunisia, it had to be disassembled and sent piecemeal before being reconstructed on location.
After the Flying Wing was destroyed in the film in 1981, the remains of the plane sat quietly in the Tunisian desert, where parts of it was salvaged by prop collectors.

great wagon design, from the Burt Lancaster movie "The Scalphunters" with Ossie Davis, Telly Savalas, and Shelly Winters

I liked the movie, Ossie and Burt have contrasting views about everything, Telly is the bad guy who has stolen from Burt, and this wagon is Shelly's transport to Mexico. The small stove over the water barrel, the little dresser and mirror, and the canvas shades that roll up are nice features, but the best part is the full size brass bed inside the wagon for a comfortable nights sleep, every night. No camping on the ground with a bedroll and blanket, hell no, it's a matress and pillows plus sheets and blankets = total comfort

The Wanderwell expedition "WITH CAR AND CAMERA AROUND THE WORLD" in a Ford Model T from 1921-1924, pure adventure

Among the advertures, the Wanderwells were present at the opening of King Tut's tomb, visited the Pyramids and Sphinx, the Great Wall of China, the Eiffel Tower, Mayan and Aztec ruins in Mexico and Central America, and Angkor Wat in Indochina

Captain Walter Wanderwell, an adventurer, inventor and former sailor with an itch for world travel, conceived the notion of circling the globe by automobile. Ultimately, the Wanderwells drove through 43 countries on four continents, in nearly four years in travels making a Ford the first round the world vehicle.

Wanderwell's exploits were news via papers and movie clips, and preceded him to Paris, where a 14 yr old woman needed an escape from a convent boarding school, inspired by the fantastic tales she read in her father's beloved collection of boyhood books, Idris dreamed of travel, adventure, and intrigue in far-flung corners of the globe when reading  an advertisement in the Riviera edition of the Paris Herald caught her eye: "Brains, Beauty & Breeches - World Tour Offer For Lucky Young Woman.... Wanted to join an expedition...Asia, Africa...." and when getting his autograph in Paris, she convinced Walter of her beneficial attributes. For besides her youth (13 years junior to 27 year old Walter) and beauty, she was fluent in French, Spanish, Italian, and marginally fluent in Russian, Chinese and Japanese. Upon meeting the eager teenager, he was immediately struck by her charisma and adventurous spirit, welcomed her to the crew.

 He was on the first leg of his journey around the world by car and was making his expenses by lecturing en route. He was 27 then, an "enormously handsome" Pole who had run away to sea as a small boy and had seen virtually the entire world when his ship put in at Baltimore in World War I, he left his ship and began to hike across the United States, paying his way by giving talks in churches about the situation in Europe. He actually became fluent in English by using it from the lecture platform

By taking command of Unit 2, Aloha became the first woman to drive from Paris to Peking as well as the first woman to girdle the globe south of the Himalayas. At times she disguised herself as a man and prayed in Mecca… hunted elephants in Indo-China, became a confidante of Chinese bandits, and was even granted the title of "Honorary Colonel” in the Red Army of Siberia… and hob-nobbed with Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks during a visit to Hollywood. 

Together, the two Ford cars covered Spain, Portugal, Morocco, Italy, San Marino, Switzerland, Belgium, Holland, Germany, Poland, Russia, Romania, Bulgaria, Greece, Turkey, Syria, Palestine, Egypt, crossing the Red Sea then to India, Burma, Indo-China, Siberia, Japan, the Sandwich Islands, and arrived by steam ship January 5, 1925 in San Francisco, for the last leg of the around the world tour.

Born in 1906, in Winnipeg, Canada, as Idris Hall, (her gypsy mother nicknamed her Aloha) she carried on various travels following her husband’s death that included learning to fly a float plane and participating in a search for the lost Percy Fawcett Expedition in Brazil.During her lifetime expeditions, Aloha Wanderwell was held captive by the Chinese, lived with the natives in Borneo, and camped beside the Sphinx in Egypt

Captain Wanderwell kept the expedition alive in a time where financial contributions from sponsors were unheard of. He sold ads and bartered with local merchants to bring in the revenue that kept them moving forward. He cranked tens of thousands of feet of film through 35-millimeter movie cameras along this fantastic journey. These films were shown in theaters to paying audiences in every city they visited, after which souvenir booklets of the trip were sold, thereby generating the money needed to buy gas and supplies so the expedition could continue.

About halfway through the trip--which took almost three years--the Wanderwell group learned that Gen. Billy Mitchell had sold the U.S. government on the idea of sponsoring the first effort to circle the world by air (the Great Air Race) It would be made by half a dozen early Douglas transport planes, crewed by Army pilots and navigators. As Mitchell predicted, the idea attracted a great deal of public attention all over the world.


The Wanderwells left their cars on display in a central square in downtown Calcutta after arriving in a mad dash from Egypt, and went to bed. By the time they were rested, two of the Douglas World Cruisers had landed in a river next to the square (the planes were equipped with pontoons) and were also on display, along with the crews that had flown them there. 


 So the two groups of explorers--one airborne, the other landlocked--met in Calcutta, and Aloha recorded the event on film.  She was the only one to film the event, and in 1989  a New York film company called David Grubin Productions has come up with the idea of a television series based on stories that illuminate the "American Experience" and has chosen the 1924 round-the-world flight to lead off the 1989 season. In researching the story, Grubin discovered that Aloha Baker was unique among living witnesses of the flight (two of the pilots are still living and are interviewed on the show) because she had actual film footage of her meeting with the fliers.  http://articles.latimes.com/1989-09-30/news/li-379_1_great-air-race

By 1929, when they had concluded their initial trek across the globe and released their documentary WITH CAR AND CAMERA AROUND THE WORLD, the Wanderwells had become internationally acclaimed explorers. Their initial expedition was followed by an even more extraordinary adventure deep in the Mata Grosso region of the Amazon basin, when their plane went down in the uncharted jungle and Aloha had to remain behind with an indigenous tribe while Walter slowly made his way back to civilization to secure replacement parts, a trek that took several months. The ever-resourceful Aloha charmed the natives, continued filming, and carefully documented their lives. Her film, FLIGHT TO THE STONE AGE BOROROS, was the earliest filmed record of the Bororo tribe and stands today as an important anthropological resource within the Smithsonian Institute’s Human Studies Archive.

When they returned from a trip to Europe in 1932, they bought a yacht that had been confiscated from rumrunners by the U.S. government. Wanderwell spent much of his time on the yacht while Baker was editing film in Hollywood.

The hoods from some of these auto's, had signatures from USA presidents, famous actors etc. they may still exist"   

Alan Boyd and Richard Diamond are working on a film documentary to be called, A DRIVING PASSION. It will include the remarkable films of the Wanderwell Expedition, unseen for over 65 years. I hope this exciting adventure documentary will finish production in the future.

I've never seen so many AAA and other club badges outside a museum, and she is standing next to a car with the ones she personally earned the hard way
